The School of Health Professions

The mission of the School of Health Professions is to encourage the individual development of each student and enable students to become competent health care professionals. The School seeks to promote a scholarly climate that fosters critical thinking, creativity, ethical decision-making, and self-directed lifelong learning in an environment where knowledge and research are valued. The faculty are outstanding teachers who are generous with their time and also are committed to service in the community, professional organizations, and research.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares students to practice as professional nurses. The program is ideal for entering freshman and students with a small number of general education transfer credits in non-nursing fields.

Online RN-to-BSN - Online Nursing Degree

This program is for the entering student who is already a registered nurse with diploma or associate degree credentials.

Applicants who have received the associate degree from a program accredited by the NLN may begin taking upper division Nursing classes. Those who graduated from a diploma program or a program that is not NLN accredited, but have RN licensure in the USA, are eligible to receive up to 33 transfer credits in Nursing that will be placed in an escrow account. These credits will be granted upon successful completion of all 300 level nursing courses.

Applicants may also establish general education credits by passing validation examinations in any or all of the following subject areas: anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and microbiology. All general education validation examinations are administered in the University's Learning Resource Center.

This program is facilitated through Marymount's Reston Center, located just off the Dulles Toll Road.

Accelerated BSN

The Accelerated BSN program may be completed in four semesters by students who have earned a non-Nursing bachelor's degree. Students are exempt from general education course requirements; any science courses are evaluated for transfer credit if a grade of C or higher was earned. The Nursing courses are the same as those offered in the regular BSN program. Course sequencing is modified to permit early completion.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program offers three majors:

Family Nurse Practitioner
This program prepares nurse practitioners to provide primary care to the family. An in-depth study is made of health, as well as common acute and chronic illnesses throughout the life cycle. Laboratory and clinical experiences are provided to develop competence in the diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses. The program prepares graduates to sit for nationally recognized certification examinations offered by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Credentialing Committee. A post-master's certificate is also available.

Nursing Education

This program prepares nurses for successful careers as nurse educators in a variety of academic and service settings.

All majors build on the BSN and integrate three core content areas: role development, research and clinical nursing practice. A post-master's certificate is also available.

RN-to-MSN

This program is designed for the registered nurse who is a graduate of an accredited nursing education program and who has demonstrated one to two years RN nursing practice/employment/experience within the last three years. Those who hold the RN and a baccalaureate degree in another field are exempt from the university general education requirements.
