The Cycle of a Progressive Career in Nursing

Nursing Degrees : The Cycle of a Progressive Career in Nursing by Brent McNutt

Nursing perhaps has the most variety of career options in the medical field. There could be various ways to progress in nursing and several more different ways to specialize. This is perhaps the reason why professional nurses are in high demand across nations, there is simply so much need for nursing services across different areas and there never seems to be enough to satisfy these needs. The variety also makes a professional nurse get into the line of work that best fits them; it is often just a matter of picking from a list of available options.

What is crucial is that a nurse makes his or her status officially professional by getting a license. This could be done by simply completing the necessary requirements like certifications and board exams under the government's regulatory commission. As soon as the necessary certification is met, then a bevy of highly attractive career options can and will follow.

Like all bachelor's degree course, professional nurses may choose to get into the educational setting. They may opt to trade in the wards for classrooms to contribute to preparing aspiring nurses for the demands of the profession. In selecting the educational structure nurses will follow an educational career path. This means that the progression begins with an instructors position and through time, experience, and further education leads to a department heads position, and finally a dean's position.

A professional nurse may also choose to progress through the traditional medical career path. Professional nurses start as volunteers to earn a spot as a staff nurse. In time a staff nurse progresses to a head nurses position where he or she assumes supervision of staff and volunteer nurses. In a professional nurse's movement towards a head nurses position certain certifications are required, certifications that prove refinement in certain skill sets like IV certifications.

Professional nurses may also opt to specialize in certain fields. This deviates from the typical career path of a certain nurse since instead of practicing general nursing the specialization allows the professional nurse to concentrate in one field alone. An example of this type of career path is when a professional nurse specializes in surgery and becomes a surgical nurse. This means that the nurse's primary function will be assisting Doctors and other medical professionals while operating or doing surgery. This of course requires fine tuned skills to accomplish that can only be brought about by experience and training.

Nurses also have the option to work in the private sector. Professional nurses may opt to work for a company and become a company nurse where his or her main concern is to maintain the wellness and health of employees. Also a nurse in the private sector could focus on caring for just one patient making him or her private nurse. Progression in the private sector however varies from company to company though it usually is similar to the corporate setting where a professional progresses as an entry level worker with minimum responsibilities to a supervisory position with a significantly higher amount of responsibilities.
