You can complete the program of study in two years, if studying full time. Alternatively, you may choose to take up to five years to complete your MSN degree. You will develop a timeline that works for you.

The faculty provides you with guidance via computer forums, e-mail and phone. Support, explanations and information are as close as your computer and phone line. We also foster interaction with the school community through our web-based communications portal, which processes over 2000 messages daily. Many assignments are designed to encourage interaction from within the community in which you live.

Clinical preceptors are sought within the student's own community whenever possible, allowing students to learn in their home area. We have over 1000 preceptor sites across the United States with more added on a regular basis.

Educational Tracks
The Frontier School offers several tracks:

MSN leading to:
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Certificate leading to:
Post-Master's Certificate in Nurse Midwifery (CNM)
Post-Master's Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
Post-Master's Certificate in Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner (WHCNP)

All tracks offer a strong academic and clinical basis as well as a unique emphasis - providing a strong foundation in understanding the business of primary care. In the Nurse Practitioner tracks, this includes assessing a community to discover its primary care needs, how to develop a plan for having a fiscally viable practice and working within the license and insurance regulations of your state. The nurse-midwifery tracks educate students not only to be nurse-midwives but to be entrepreneurs with its focus on how to develop a Birth Center, community assessment and the business issues of becoming a nurse-midwife. Online Nursing Degree - Case Management Nursing Career Profile

Online Nursing Degree - Case Management Nursing Career Profile

If you're interested in a new direction for your nursing career and are interested in ensuring that patients and their families receive quality, cost-effective health care, then you might want to look into Case Management Nursing. Case Management Nursing focuses mainly on planning and managing all aspects of patient care and services for their assigned cases.

Case Management Nursing duties include assessing and monitoring patients, determining eligibility for treatments, making use of clinical pathways in order to determine whether the plan of care being provided meets the patient's needs, and arranging for additional services as needed in order to help patients achieve desired outcomes. A Case Management Nurse conducts research, analyzes data, and coordinates patient care with all members of the patient's health care team providing each patient with individual planning and planning in order to ensure optimum outcome while also seeking to ensure care and services provided are appropriate to patient needs and cost effective.

Case management nurses help patients and their families by making sure that procedures approved by their organizations hopefully lead to quantifiable results instead of unnecessary procedures without possible merit.

Case Management Nurses Help Achieve Positive Patient Outcomes
The main goals of a case management nurse is to make sure that the patient receives quality and appropriate care as well as the most cost effective services. This usually requires working directly with patients and/or their families, developing a professional relationship with them in order to perform assessments on the patient, as well as analysis of data. Once an assessment has been completed and all proper data has been collected, the case management nurse works in close collaboration with the patient's physician and all members of the health care team in order to coordinate and manage all aspects of that patient's care and services including arranging referrals as needed.

One of the ways you might expect to use your skills as a case management nurse is if a patient that is covered under a certain type of health insurance policy is asking for a certain surgical procedure that can improve their ailment. If it is a procedure that is not common or is very expensive, a case management nurse may contact the patient and the doctor and find out if there are benefits to performing this surgical procedure for the patient. This requires the case management nurse to collect information about the patient, do research on the surgical procedure and analyze other data relating to the procedure so that this information can be prepared and sent to a person qualified to make a decision on whether an insurance company or other agency will pay for the procedure.

Work Environment & Salary for Case Management Nurses
Case Management Nurses have the ability to practice as independent consultants or to work for hospitals, physicians, specialists, rehabilitation agencies, insurance companies, workman's comp providers, home health agencies, long term care facilities, private corporations, and for government agencies. Nurse Case Managers provide their services in the hospital setting, in outpatient settings, and also in the community.

One of the reasons to look into earning your certificate as RN Case Manager is its rather generous salary. The top tier of nursing case managers make well over $75,000 per year and those working for government agencies such as worker's compensation providers typically earn over $55,000 per year. Compensation usually varies by location, job skills and experience as well as the types of cases you handle. For instance, workers comp and managed care cases may be on the lower end of the pay scale, while employment at a large name corporate insurance office will pay much higher.

The Evidence is Clear - Forensic Nursing Is A Hot Career

The Evidence is Clear - Forensic Nursing Is A Hot Career

Forensic Nursing is one of the fastest growing nursing specialty fields thanks in part to rising interest brought about in recent years by several popular TV shows such as CSI. Real life Forensic Nursing isn't exactly the same as what's portrayed on television though, so here is some additional information to help you know the difference between Hollywood drama and reality.

Most patients that forensic nurses deal with are patients that have been involved in a violent crime and require expert medical attention. Besides treating a patient for injuries, another service that forensic nurses must provide is the ability to compile evidence appropriately. An example would be to treat a person that was sexually assaulted. As a forensic nurse, you will need to provide proper medical treatment, as well as collect evidence, possibly DNA so that a case can be compiled and a perpetrator can be charged with a crime.

Besides dealing with sexual assaults, forensic nurses might be called in to administer care to patients that have been involved in a violent crime such as a shooting or stabbing. A forensic nurse’s work is inquisitive, investigative, and often emotionally charged. Forensic nurses play an extremely important role and nurses interested in doing challenging work that really makes a difference might find it to be exactly what they've been looking for.

Forensic nursing is a fairly new nursing specialty. In fact, the phrase of forensic nursing wasn't even coined until the early 1990’s when several dozen nurses met for a convention on the topic of sexual assault. In short time, a new association was created which was called IAFN, the International Association of Forensic Nurses.

While today there are thousands of nurses that belong to the IAFN, they are split among many different fields. One of the main branches of forensic nursing are SANE Nurses, sexual assault nurse examiners. These forensic nurses treat sexual assault victims while trying to collect evidence in the process, in order to build a solid legal case. Other types of forensic nurses might focus on domestic violence, child abuse cases, or homicide, at accident scenes, or doing research. Wherever a crime against another person has been committed forensic nurses are likely to play a vital role.

Besides dealing with violent crimes, forensic nurses may be called on to assist during autopsies in order to determine cause of death. Other forensic nurses may work crime labs examining evidence, as field examiners at crime scene locations, or work as independent consultants, or for law firms in the capacity of expert witnesses.

If you are interested in forensic nursing but do not find treating crime victims extremely appealing, many forensic nurses help out attorneys, as well as health agencies as trial experts. Many forensic nurses can be asked to appear at a court case or legal proceeding to give their expert legal opinion on a specific incident.

Forensic nurse salaries typically vary by position. For instance, as a consultant, you can command hundreds of dollars per hour, however you usually need to be in the field for a long time, as well as have a an extremely good reputation. For forensic nurses that work in a private hospital helping out with autopsies, salaries are usually higher than an average nurse. For forensic nurses that may work for a government agencies such as law enforcement, for health agencies, or in public hospitals salaries vary depending upon experience, education, type of employer, and location, ranging on average between $55 to $300 per hour.

If you are interested in learning more about forensic nursing please request free information from Kaplan University below. Kaplan University offers a totally online Forensic Nursing Certificate program that you can complete within a year. Kaplan's online Forensic Nursing program allows you to attend class anytime, anywhere 24/7 at your own pace whenever and wherever it's most convenient for you.

    What is Legal Nurse Consulting?

    What is Legal Nurse Consulting?

The film "Erin Brockovich" told the true story of an inexperienced legal secretary who stumbled across some references to chromium contaminated water while researching real estate documents for her law firm. Her inquisitive mind led her to interview members of a community affected by chromium-contaminated drinking water near Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s natural gas pumping stations at Kettleman and Topock, California, where she was struck by the number of residents suffering from cancer and other debilitating illnesses. Reviews of medical records and scientific data conducted by expert consultants subsequently led her firm to spearhead 1,250 claims in 15 class action lawsuits on behalf of people who suffered personal injuries due to the chromium contamination. PG&E ended up settling the claims in 1996 for $333 million.

A Legal Nurse Consultant is Like Erin Brockovich on Steroids

Most attorneys haven't got a clue when it comes to reading or understanding medical records. Few, if any, understand medical terminology, would know a normal test value from an abnormal one, have any idea what the treatment or care should be for any given illness or injury, or know whether a provider practiced within their accepted scope of practice or met accepted standards of care. Legal Nurse Consultants bridge that gap by providing professional contributions that are often critical to the success of the case.

Legal Nurse Consultants (LNCs) combine nursing expertise with legal knowledge to advise attorneys and others on matters involving medical malpractice, personal injury, product liability, workers' compensation, healthcare licensure investigations, and other healthcare related cases. Legal Nurse Consultants review and analyze medical records, screen for record tampering, interview clients, conduct research and summarize medical literature, help evaluate liabilities and damages, assist with discovery and depositions, prepare exhibits, and render informed opinions to attorneys on the delivery of health care and its outcomes for specific cases. LNCs assist in the selection of expert witnesses as needed, and independent Legal Nurse Consultants may, from time to time, serve as as expert witnesses in cases involving nursing standards of care or related matters as well. The expertise and diligence of Legal Nurse Consultants help all parties involved achieve a fair and just outcome.

The Demand for Legal Nurse Consultants

The demand for Legal Nurse Consultants is at an all-time high. At least 25% of attorneys today deal with medical malpractice lawsuits. Consequently the demand for competent, experienced nurses who can work with them is also continually on the rise.

Employment for Legal Nurse Consultants is readily available with insurance companies, law firms, HMOs, hospital risk management departments, consulting firms, and government offices, many choose to operate independently, working with those organizations on a case-by-case basis.

Legal Nurse Consultants who work in law firms, insurance companies, and for other employers typically earn salaries approximately the same as those of hospital nursing administrators, (about $80,000 in 2004, according to a Nursing Management salary survey conducted that year). LNCs who go into business for themselves as independent consultants charge hourly fees of $100 to $200 or more for their services.

How to Become a Legal Nurse Consultant

Legal Nurse Consulting education is offered by universities, colleges, community colleges, for-profit businesses, and not-for-profit organizations. In assessing the value of these programs, the reputation and accreditation of the sponsoring institution should be considered. The primary focus of legal nurse consulting education should be to build on nursing education and clinical experience and to prepare nurses to perform in the legal arena.

Legal Nurse Consultants come from all levels of registered nurse educational backgrounds and practice areas. Legal Nurse Consultants having a strong background of medical-surgical nursing are just as valuable to the profession as those with backgrounds in specialty nursing practice areas such as critical care, neonatology, cardiology, or oncology. Experience as a registered nurse, regardless of practice specialty, provides the foundation of knowledge that allows LNCs to review, analyze, and advise on a wide variety of medical legal cases.

Completing a formal education program in Legal Nurse Consulting provides nurses with skills, knowledge and credentials that enable them to explore new job opportunities with insurance companies, law firms, health care management organizations, law enforcement, government agencies, or even set up independent consulting businesses.

Kaplan University offers an online nurse attorney-instructed program in Legal Nurse Consulting which can be completed in under a year. Kaplan University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional accreditation commission recognized by the United States Department of Education. The program requires students to take five classes, including:

    - Introduction to Legal Nurse Consulting
    - Civil Litigation for the Legal Nurse Consultant
    - Principles of Tort Law and Medical Liability
    - Medical Records Summary and Review
    - Healthcare Risk Management

The Online Legal Nurse Consultant certificate program offered by Kaplan University allows students to do their course work when they want to, where they want to, and at their own pace without having to give up their present job or income while they pursue their education. Students pay a flat-rate tuition for the entire program, and are allowed up to 12 months to complete the required classes. Once you obtain certification, you will be able to begin practicing as a Legal Nurse Consultant.

Certification for Legal Nurse Consultants is available through the American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board, established in 1997 by the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants.

    Nursing Educators Needed Stat!

Nursing Educators Needed Stat! by Sara Ellis RN, BSN

Nursing is the nation's largest health care profession, with more than 2.7 million registered nurses nationwide, and nursing students account for more than half of all health professions students in the United States. Applications to attend nursing schools continue to increase nicely but did you know that thousands of students are being turned away because of an acute shortage of Nursing Educators?

A study done by the U.S. Bureau of Health Professions indicates that by 2020, the U.S. nursing shortage will grow to more than 800,000 registered nurses. How can we put a serious dent in stemming this dangerous tide unless nurses take an active role in educating the nurses of tomorrow?

Becoming a Nurse Educator is a wonderful career choice

Registered nurses ARE teachers! RNs teach patients and their families how to manage their illness or injury, including post-treatment home care needs, diet and exercise programs, and self-administration of medication and physical therapy. RNs mentor and precept new graduates and new hire staff as well as develop and implement ongoing continuing education activities within clinical settings. RNs combine their clinical expertise and passion for teaching others in thousands of ways every time they work.

Nurse Educators make use of that same clinical expertise and passion for teaching to guide and shape the future of the nursing profession- one student at a time!

Do you want to be doing direct patient care when you're 63 and still waiting to be old enough to retire? I say leave bedside nursing to the younger nurses, give your sore back a rest, and turn your talents towards building the next generation of nurses instead!

Some RNs choose to advance their nursing career by moving into hospital administration or nursing management positions, but the responsibilities and stress of management isn't for everyone. For those RNs who would enjoy keeping in touch with direct patient care and in shaping the future of nursing the best career path to think about is becoming a nurse educator!

Given the growing shortage of nurse educators, the career outlook is strong for nurses interested in teaching careers. Nursing schools nationwide are struggling to find new faculty to accommodate the rising interest in nursing among new students.

    Career Flexibility

Most nurse educators work in colleges and universities that offer associate and baccalaureate programs in nursing, and some work as instructors for LPN courses while educators involved in clinical education also work at collaborating health care facilities. A Master's degree in nursing is typically required to become a faculty member at a university but RNs with a Bachelors degree in nursing and clinical experience are the minimum basic requirements for clinical instructors.

Nurse educators can work as full time faculty with all the benefits including tenure and retirement, or may choose to work as part time faculty while still continuing clinical employment and direct patient care. Online Nursing Degree - Nurse Practitioner Career Profile

Online Nursing Degree - Nurse Practitioner Career Profile

Nurse Practitioners expand the horizons of the nursing profession by providing a unique blend of nursing and medicine into their scope of practice. Initially, the University of Colorado answered a much needed call to more accessible health care for children by developing a Nurse Practitioner program in 1965. Since that first program first began, doors have opened with opportunities for today's Nurse Practitioner that include unprecedented autonomy, authority, income, and job satisfaction. The demand for more Nurse Practitioners continues to grow as they present a viable solution to the growing trend of fewer physicians entering the field of family practice.

Registered nurses seeking a career that offers challenge as well as autonomy find that the efforts in becoming a nurse practitioner are well worth the end results. A nurse practitioner’s duties and responsibilities include tasks which were at one time only a physician’s prerogative. Nurse Practitioners regularly provide such services as physical examinations, acquiring medical histories, diagnosing and treating chronic infections and injuries, ordering and assessing diagnostic tests, and writing prescriptions, but let’s take a closer look at some of the things a nurse practitioner routinely does throughout the day.

Encouraging and educating communities in regards to healthy lifestyles are just two of the prime duties of nurse practitioners. The ability to communicate with compassion and understanding in regards to health care problems and solutions bridges the gap between professional and patient. Through a number of tasks and duties the universal need for health care is met. These duties include:

    Assessing:
    1. Obtain health and medical histories of patients.
    2. Execute age based physical examinations.
    3. Perform preventative screening tests such as hearing, vision, and cancer tests.
    4. Identify any risks the patient may have and outline needs of the patient.

    Diagnosing:
    1. Order diagnostic tests appropriate to patient’s needs
    2. Evaluate patient health, medical history, and diagnostic tests

    Managing Patient Care Plan:
    1. Discern needs of family or community based on pertinent information collected.
    2. Implement a care plan that may include prescribing medications (the legalities of nurse practitioners granted written prescriptions rights differs from state to state at this point in time)
    3. Provide and promote health care education
    4. When warranted, make referrals to health care agencies or the appropriate health care professional.
    5. Continually reassess and make adjustments to plan of care in order to accomplish health care goals.

Beyond the scope of professional skills and duties character attributes play a part in choosing to take the plunge into advancing your career from registered nurse to nurse practitioner. If you display good judgment, a level of maturity, compassion and understanding, you’re an excellent candidate. If you also have the ability to inspire both those you care for, as well as other health care providers and you remain calm in the face of emergencies, you’re just what your patient needs. A great opportunity for independence and professional autonomy exists for nurse practitioners. Nurse Practitioners commonly specialize in practice areas that include:

    1. Pediatrics Nurse Practitioners deal with infants, children, and young adults encouraging valuable positive health behaviors, as well as addressing childhood illness.

    2. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, in cooperation with other health care professionals, are responsible for assessing, diagnosing and managing the care of newborns with significant health problems.

    3. Family Nurse Practitioners offer primary health care for all ages from infants to the elderly in terms of wellness and chronic and acute illnesses.

    4. The Nurse Mid-Wife or OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner focuses on issues that face women and on pre-natal care and delivery of newborns.

    5. Nurse Anesthetists administer 65% of the 27 million anesthetics given to patients each year.

    6. The Gerontologic Nurse Practitioners specialize in caring for and treating the elderly. As more baby boomers age, this is a field that will be in much demand.

    7. Other specializations worth looking into include neurology, nephrology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology, and pulmonology.

The rewards of advancing your nursing career to a higher level of education and practice are many and varied. In addition to the increased level of autonomy and personal satisfaction involved, Nurse practitioners earn anywhere from $70,000 to $120,000 plus per year depending on years of experience, location, and specialization. While Nurse Practitioners can readily find employment as colleagues practicing in collaboration with physicians in their offices, positions are abundant in hospitals, government agencies, HMOs, long term care facilities, and all sorts of healthcare delivery providers.

Unlike Physician Assistants who must work under the supervision of a physician, Nurse Practitioners practice independently under the statutes of Nurse Practice Acts and can open their own practice or practice in groups just like physicians. They can be the sole authority and shoulder the entire responsibility of whatever kind of clinic they wish to open and how it will be run. As the demand for health care increases and fewer physicians become general practitioners and family care doctors, the need for nurse practitioners to provide primary care services will continue to increase.

Being satisfied with a career choice brings a feeling of accomplishment that goes well beyond salary. By acquiring control over your own destiny the future looks brighter than ever. The gratification of putting all your knowledge to work and seeing the differences it makes in the lives of people, brings a feeling of empowerment and goodwill to both community and the nurse practitioner. Having the capacity to make independent decisions, to be in authoritative positions, and even be completely autonomous, if desired, greatly enhances the career satisfaction you’ll enjoy as a nurse practitioner.

An outstanding future awaits registered nurses who seek to advance their careers by continuing their education, choosing to specialize, and becoming a nurse practitioner. As baby boomers age, the need for more nurse practitioners to fill the void will be paramount. A feeling of satisfaction along with monetary and human reward eases the way toward a decision of growing possibilities and outstanding opportunity.
