Nursing Assistant Online Schools

Nursing Assistant Online Schools by Michael Bustamante

Nursing Assistants go by different titles, depending on the area in which they work. They may be called Certified Nursing Aides, Patient Care Technicians, Nurse's Aides, Home Health Aides, or Personal Care Assistants. Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) or Certified Nursing Assistant Schools will offer programs accordingly.

Online or distance learning Nursing Assistant programs of study provide introductory level education for students interested in the field of patient care. Online training, online nursing schools, can earn the Nursing Assistant certificate in as little as six weeks, though self-paced study can be extended to meet the personal needs of each student.

Online and distance learning Nursing Assistant programs consist of home study and internet-based assignments, videos, and virtual labs. Online CNA students study human anatomy and physiology, taking of vital signs, infection control, patient safety, personal care of patients, home health care, and emergency care. Online virtual laboratory studies may include phlebotomy (drawing blood for tests), basic medications, and CPR.

A Certified Nursing Assistant works under the supervision of nursing staff and provides direct patient care to young and old alike, in hospitals, nursing homes, adult day health centers, assisted living facilities, and even personal homes. Certified Nursing Assistants are in extensive daily contact with their patients, and are the main providers of all necessary personal care. CNAs also provide vital information to supervising medical professionals. Certified Nursing Assistants support the practice of nursing in basic patient care: dressing, bathing, meals, toiletry, exercising, taking and recording vital signs, etc. The well-trained CNA will show a great deal of patience and compassion, have a sense of humor, and be able to make their patients feel comfortable, safe, and happy.

Certified Nursing Assistant programs will most likely be taught by registered nurses. Length of training depends on the school and the program. Classes are followed by a period of hands-on training, during which time the CNA's abilities and self-confidence improve with daily routines of attending to personal care of patients. Programs of study require some hours of work in a local nursing home under supervision for completion.
